![]() In 2022 Africa’s largest arms importer, Algeria ordered six CH-5 UAV drones from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. Although a recent phenomenon, this may present opportunities for African countries as well as Chinese, European or American arms exporters to increase their influence on the African arms market. One region that will possibly be most affected is Africa, as Russia was the region’s largest arms exporter (44%) for the period 2017-2021. This combination of factors could complicate Russia’s arms deliveries to other regions in the world. In addition, Western sanctions, export controls and their strife for energy independence cause declining state revenues which possibly hampers future investments in Russia’s defence sector. ![]() Russian arms, ammunition and spare parts flow increasingly to their war efforts in Ukraine which cannot be used for export. For instance, the world’s second-largest exporter of major conventional arms, Russia, is heading for an estimated 26% revenue loss, totalling $10.8 billion compared to $14.6 billion in the previous year. ![]() These geopolitical shifts cannot be separated from the international arms trade. The past year has seen many geopolitical shifts from the war in Ukraine, anti-French sentiments in the Sahel and Xi’s increasing influence on China and the world stage.
